Shirley C. Hutson

d. September 20, 2014

On Saturday evening,  September 20, 2014, Shirley C. Hutson passed away quietly and peacefully at the Delaware Hospice Center.  A resident of Harrington, she was born February 5, 1936 in Easton, MD and grew up on a small farm near Greensboro with her parents and four sisters.

She was just a teenager when she met the love of her life and began a courtship that would last more than sixty two years.  As a young couple, she and her sweetheart enjoyed many evenings at “Potsies” a local soda fountain and ice cream parlor, followed by movies at the Reese Theatre in Harrington.  He captured her heart when he arrived to the family farm in his 1949 Ford prepared to complete her evening chore of milking the cows prior to whisking her away on their dates.  Shirley married Robert “Tuck” Hutson in 1952 and they were blessed with four wonderful children.

On a beautiful Sunday morning in May of 1964, they joined hands and together walked the aisle of a small country church where they committed their hearts and lives to God.  That day proved to be life changing as they allowed their faith to strengthen the foundation upon which they were building their family.  Together they survived the ultimate test of faith when God called their youngest child to Heaven in October of 1970.  It was faith that motivated this young mother to press forward knowing that someday she would once again hold her little boy.

The most important earthly blessing to Shirley was her family.  She dearly loved her children and their spouses, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren with all her heart.  Nothing brought her more joy than having all of her family together – usually enjoying masterfully home cooked meals she prepared.  She was a fabulous cook, a great mother, a faithful wife and devoted Christian who was loved by so many.

She worked for several years at Playtex before accepting a position in Vital Statistics for the State of Delaware where she retired in December of 1996.  She always remained hard working and independent.  During her retirement years she enjoyed spending time with her family, camping and traveling with her husband.

She is survived by her husband, Robert “Tuck” Hutson Sr., a daughter Judy Hutson Townsend and her husband Rick of Milton; a son, Robert “Bob” Hutson Jr. and his wife Lori of Marydel; and a daughter, Linda Hutson Niehorster and her husband Richard of Harrington.  She was a proud grandmother of six grandchildren – Amy Thompson, Michael Voshell, Kristy Andrew, Holly Ranney, Kayla Hutson, and Joshua Niehorster.  She also had 6 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, September 25th at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington.  Visitation will be from 12 to 2 PM prior to the service.  Interment will be in the Greensboro Cemetery, Greensboro, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.  Please include Shirley’s name on the memo line of your contribution to this remarkable and heartfelt organization.
