Richard A. “Popeye” Moyer, of Harrington, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 16, 2014, from the Milford Hospice Center. He was 73. Popeye was born to the late Raymond Moyer and Marcella Wenrich.
Popeye was drafted in the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam War. He was an over the road truck driver for many years. He first started with Jimmy Hudson, then drove for A.J. Williams, and also D&B Transportation. He also worked for National Concrete, and most recently, he worked at the paddocks in Harrington and Dover for the Delaware Harness Racing.
When he was not hard at work, Popeye enjoyed watching football, harness racing, golfing, fishing of the pier in Lewes, and demolition derbies. In his younger days, he looked forward to driving in the derbies every year. Popeye also loved helping his family with farming. He enjoyed helping with the beef cattle and goats. He also loved cutting grass on his John Deere. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him.
Popeye was a die hard Republican and never bashful about it. He enjoyed attending Calvary Wesleyan Church of Harrington, and was a former member of the Harrington Moose Lodge #534.
He is survived by his daughters, Rebecca Robbins (Cole Haggerty) of Milford, Dana (Norman) Barlow of Harrington; sister, Melrose Salmons of Harrington; 5 grandchildren, Michael Robbins, Brooke Barlow, Maura Robbins, Rylee Barlow, Delayna Barlow; 2 great grandchildren, Kaydance Robbins, Isabella Carpenter; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will take place on Friday, March 21, 2014, at 2 pm, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington. Visitation will take place two hours prior to the service. Interment will be at Hollywood Cemetery.
