Phyllis Cassey

Phyllis Sherwood Cassey, Milford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at the Country Rest Home, Greenwood.

Phyllis was born on a farm in Houston, DE to the late, Homer Sr, and Ethel Sherwood.  Phyllis graduated from Harrington High School in 1954.  After High School, she worked for First National Bank of Harrington.  Phyllis also worked at the ACE Dress Company a few years before she took a position with the State Treasurers Office of Delaware.  Phyllis retired from the State Treasurers Office with 30 years of service.  Not being one to sit idle, Phyllis volunteered at the Milford Memorial Hospital gift shop and the Veterans Home of Milford.  Phyllis loved sewing, knitting, and reading, she never gave up an  opportunity to travel to a quilt shop or show, with her niece Jill.  Phyllis enjoyed the annual Christmas shopping trips with her sister Helen, nieces and great nieces.  For many years, Phyllis and husband Joe belonged to the Kent Campers, enjoyed many camping trips and made many friends.  The greatest enjoyment for Phyllis was when she was able to travel to Michigan to visit with her son Shawn and his family.

Phyllis was a founding member of the Pilgrim Chapel where she loved to sing in the choir and singing in a trio with her sister Helen and husband Joe.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Sherwood,  Alice Rowding, Evelyn Melvin, Ruth Martine, Florence Fry, and her lifelong best friend Helen Maloney.  Also preceded in death by brothers, Daniel Sherwood and Homer "Franklin" Sherwood Jr., and an infant granddaughter, Hanna Cassey.

Phyllis is survived by her husband of 53 years, Joe; son, Shawn and daughter in law, Jennifer Cassey; four grandchildren, Haley Kroupa (Brad), Emma Rose Kroskie (Dominique), Tolan Cassey and Paige Mactavish.  Phyllis also had 4 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews that held a special place in her heart.

Services for Phyllis will be on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE, at  12 PM.  A public visitation will start at 11 AM.  Interment will be at the Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
