Mildred Melvin, 85

MAGNOLIA — Mildred Melvin passed away on Friday, July 29, 2016 at Bayhealth – Kent General at the age of 85. She was the daughter of the late Carlton and Violia  Layton.


Mrs. Melvin was a loving wife and homemaker who faithfully took care of her husband and family. She enjoyed watching and taking care of her grandchildren. Upon her husband’s retirement, they traveled throughout the U.S. extensively; they visited Texas at least 15 times to see their oldest son Gary who was serving in the USAF at the time. Mrs. Melvin loved to go square dancing, bowling and swimming at Lake Forest high school pool for 20 years.


Mrs. Melvin was a member of the Magnolia United Methodist Church.


In addition to her parents, Mrs. Melvin is preceded by her husband, William E. Melvin and brother, Theodore Layton.

Mrs. Melvin is survived by her two sons, Gary Melvin (Alina) of Felton, Dale Melvin (Diane) of Wyoming; daughter, Linda “J” Thomas of Magnolia; brothers, Kenneth Layton of Milford, David Layton of Milford, and Paul Layton of Milford; 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.


Graveside services will be Wednesday, August 3, 2016, at Barratts Chapel Cemetery, 6362 Bay Rd, Frederica, DE at 11 a.m. A Memorial Service will follow at noon at Magnolia United Methodist Church, 39 Main St., Magnolia, DE 19962.


In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, PO Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.
