Marvin Mears Richardson, of Harrington, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2013, from the Country Rest Home, Greenwood. He was 87. He was born to the late Fred Floyd and Mary Richardson Sr.
Mr. Richardson served his country proudly in the US Army with the 346th Infantry 87th Division during WWII. He served in many countries including Europe, Rhineland, and Africa. He was one of 18,000 troops that rode the Queen Mary to Europe. He received numerous medals for his time served.
Mr. Richardson worked for the railroad for over 36 years. He first started with the Pennsylvania Railroad, and at the time of his retirement, he was track foreman for Conrail. Before his career with the railroad, he worked for Tomboy Kelly in Eastville, VA, where he was originally from. (It was in Virginia that his father gave him the childhood nickname "Virginia Monkey" because he was always climbing trees.) All throughout his career, he also worked as an electrician doing side jobs. He helped wire many of his family’s homes.
Mr. Richardson was a staple to the Harrington community. He walked 5 miles every day around town, and knew what was going on around town. He loved to travel with his family. In his lifetime, he owned 5 motor homes, and visited every state except for 2. Every summer, he took one of his daughters and their extended family to wherever they wanted to go for two weeks. They took turns every year. He also took everyone on numerous trips to Busch Gardens, Kings Dominion, Disney, and Hershey Park to name just a few. They had many wonderful adventures camping in those motor homes. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and working on his lawn. His shed was immaculate.
He will be remembered as a loving husband and father, but very ornery. He was always smiling and easy going. He married the love of his life, and they were truly inseparable. They did everything together, and you never saw them yell or fight a true testament to their love. He will be sorely missed.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred F. Richardson Jr., and a sister, Hazel Ewell.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ruby W. Richardson of Harrington; daughters, Patricia Lord of Harrington, Linda Wamsley of Harrington, Nancy Welch of Magnolia; 5 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.
Service will be Monday, March 25, 2013, at 1 PM, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
