Margaret Jane Burgess

Margaret Jane Melvin Burgess went Home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 29, 2015 from the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford.  She was 84.  Jane was born in Farmington, DE to the late, F. Nelson and Margaret Alice Melvin.

Jane graduated from the Harrington High School in 1949, and a few weeks later married her sweetheart, Keith S. Burgess, on July 2, 1949.  Jane worked as a secretary/bookkeeper at Harrington Lumber and Supply Co. for approximately 20 years at different times.  During that time, she also worked for Downing Fuel Service, Downing Engineering, and a short time for Kirby & Holloway Transport.  She then went to work at the Lake Forest School District as a bookkeeper for 16 years, retiring in June of 1991.   In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles.

Jane was very active in the Asbury United Methodist Church of Harrington.  She enjoyed singing in the Cathedral Choir for many years.  She was also a member of the Asbury United Methodist Women and a member of the Asbury Memorial Committee.  Her love and devotion to her family will forever be remembered as well as her beautiful personality and charisma.

In addition to her parents, Jane is also preceded in death by her sister, Amanda Doris Morris; and a brother, F. Riley Melvin.

She is survived by her son, Mathew M. Burgess of Harrington; grandchildren, Keith S. Burgess II, Alison M. Burgess, Emily Elborn; aunt, Laura Belle Layton; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will take place at 1 PM at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrington on Sunday, August 2, 2015.  A reception will immediately follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the Asbury United Methodist Church, 200 Wiener Ave., Harrington, DE 19952.
