Linwood T. Kates

Linwood T. Kates, Harrington, passed away Sunday evening, May 8, 2022 surrounded by his family at the Country Rest Home in Greenwood, he was 92.  He is the son of the late, Henry T. and Attie McKnatt Kates.

Mr. Kates served his country proudly in the US Army from 1948 to 1952, and then spent the next 30 plus years working for Diamond State Telephone Co., Bell Atlantic, and AT&T, retiring in 1984.  Mr. Kates loved harness racing, stock car and NASCAR racing, spending time at the beach, fishing, and especially gardening.  He had some of the biggest tomato plants in town.  The highlight of his summers included spending time at the Delaware State Fair, and watching the people as he was sitting with family in "Kates' Corner".  One of his prized talents was his singing.  He oftentimes would be heard singing, and everyone loved to hear him sing.  He had a caring heart and loved his family immensely, and will be greatly missed.

Mr. Kates served previously on the Harrington City Council for several years.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, Doris Williamson Kates, he is preceded in death by daughters, Faye Kates Moore, Linda Kates Barlow; son, Roger William Kates; siblings, Leon Kates, Benjamin Kates, Thelma Porter, Hoarce Kates, and Imogene Jordan.

He is survived by his daughters, Connie (Ed) Thompson, Ruth (Gary) Peterman; grandchildren, Steve and Tim Gray, Kyle Peterman, David, Jason, and Melissa Moore; great grandchildren, Rosalynn and Zoey Gray, Aubrey and Bristol Moore, Jason Jr. and Chase Moore, Raelynn and Jameson Peterman.

A Memorial Service will be on Monday, May 16, 2022, at 1 PM with a visitation one hour prior starting at 12pm, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE.  Interment will immediately follow at the Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
