GREENWOOD — Leroy S. Van Vorst passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2015 at home surrounded by his loving family. Leroy was born in Milford, DE to the late Cornelius William and Cora Elvira Van Vorst.
Leroy was a farmer for most of his life. For almost 50 years, he was involved with chicken houses, growing for Swift and Perdue. He enjoyed taking eggs to sell at Spence's Bazaar in Dover for many years. Farming was his life, and he enjoyed every minute of it. Anything to do with farm shows or farm auctions, he could be found there. He was a hard worker, and expected everyone who worked for him to work hard as well, however, he also knew how to have fun and make work fun.
In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and gardening. He always had a beautiful and bountiful garden every year. Leroy loved nature and his dogs. He also enjoyed harness racing, and going out to eat, especially oyster buffet dinners. He loved to play jokes and tease people. His sister Norma received most of his teasing, but everyone loved his sense of humor. Above all, he enjoyed being with his family and spending as much time as possible with them. He will be greatly missed.
Leroy attended Todd's Chapel Church in Greenwood and was a member and past president of the Adamsville Tax Ditch Assoc., and the Houston Volunteer Fire Co. from 1960 to 1976.
Leroy is preceded in death by his brothers, Cornelius, Jr., Phillip, Nelson, and sister, Doris.
Leroy is survived by his son, Daniel S. (Crystal) Van Vorst of Dover; daughter, Crystel L. (Kenneth) Farina of Denton, MD; brothers, Willis F. and Robert E. Van Vorst both of Milford, Donald R. Van Vorst of Greenwood, James E. Van Vorst of Houston; sister, Norma L. Warner of Milford; grandchildren, Jennifer Morgan Farina, Nicholas Bradey Van Vorst, and Mason Neal Van Vorst.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 24th, at 7 p.m., at the Millwood Ruritan Community Center, Milford, DE. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Van Vorst Park Assoc., Barrow Mansion, 83 Wayne St., Jersey City, N.J. 07372, in his memory.
