Leon J. Kukulka passed from this life on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the age of 89.  Leon was born in Philadelphia, PA on October 10, 1923 to parents Andzej and Zofia Kukulka.

Leon served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during WWII, as part of the Company A, 299th Combat Engineers, and was stationed in Germany and France.

He was a devoted catholic and member of the St. Bernadette Catholic Church and was the driving force behind the planning and completion of the grotto depicting St. Bernadette at Our Lady of Lourdes.  Leon was one of the last surviving church members who helped in the construction of the church and church hall.  He also belonged to the VFW and American Legion.

Survivors include his children, Lee Kukulka (Regina), Tillie Kukulka, Bonnie McCann (Hank), Ed Kukulka (Heidi), and Dolores Michels; sister, Jean Sweeney (John); grandchildren, Stas Kukulka (Karen), Anna D’Iorio (Klay), Brandon Blake, Ashleigh Malloy (Michael), Zack Michels, and Travis Michels; great granddaughters whom Leon truly cherished, Lilly Malloy, Karina D’Iorio, and Lauren Malloy; former wife, Tillie Snable; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at 11AM, at the St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Harrington.  Visitation will take place Monday evening from 6 to 8 pm, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington.  Interment will be at Westminster Cemetery, Philadelphia, on Wed. April 24th, at 11:30 am.

Leon has always wished people would wear a little more color than black to funeral services, so please respect his wishes.  Donations can be made in his memory to St. Bernadette Church Building Fund, 109 Dixon St., Harrington, DE 19952.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, visit our website at www.melvinfuneralhome.com for further information, leave a letter of condolence, or to send flowers.
