Leah S Wheeler

Leah S. Wheeler, 86, of Harrington passed away at home surrounded by her family on Monday, June 17, 2024. She was the daughter of the late Raymond Schanding, and Evelyn Schanding Ratledge.

Leah was a 1956 graduate of Felton High School where she was active in sports, participating in field hockey, basketball and softball. Upon graduation, she was awarded the Babe Ruth award, the top sports award for both male and female athletes of Felton High. She was also a pitcher for the “Harrington Belles” softball team.

Leah worked for the State of Delaware as the Kent County Operations Manager of the Division of Child Support. In her free time, she enjoyed bowling, golf, and painting pictures. She was a 50+ year member of the Harrington Moose, and a member of the Houston United Methodist Church. In 1994 she had the distinction of being named Harrington Businessmen’s "Woman of the Year" for her work through the Delaware Health & Social Services, Div of Child Support.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Walter Lee Schanding, Sr.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Leroy Wheeler; daughter, Debra (Eldred Jr.) Magruder; son, Dennis J. (Barbara) Wheeler; grandchildren, Jerry Nelson Hayman II, Casey Wheeler, Cody Wheeler, Lindsey Biddle, Shane Mears, Shai Mears; great-grandchildren, Kristie, Cayden, Landen, Madison, Savannah, Kinley, Bryson, Ezra, Ezekial, Jameson (who is soon to arrive); and sister, Barbara Clark (Richard).

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, June 21, 2024 at the Thomas E. Melvin & Son Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy. Harrington, DE 19952. Visitation will be held one hour prior beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow the service at Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington, DE.
