HARRINGTON - John E. Poggi, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at home surrounded by his family, to answer Jesus's call to come home. He was born in Staten Island, N.Y. to the late John and Louise Poggi.
Mr. Poggi served his country proudly in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. He joined the New York City Police Department and was promoted to Sergeant after a short time. He was appointed director of the Sergeant Benevolent Assoc. of Richmond Borough, where he served for several years until his retirement. After retirement, he and his wife travelled extensively throughout the United States.
After becoming restless, Mr. and Mrs. Poggi bought a failing deli on Staten Island. They renamed it John and Evelyn's Family Deli, and with the help of the entire family, built it back up into a successful deli. After a few years of hard work, they sold the deli and retired to Harrington, where they settled down and called it home.
His favorite activities included playing pool with his grandchildren, and cooking for family and friends. He enjoyed playing cards with friends and caring for his dogs, especially his "Foxy". They both enjoyed their car rides together. Mr. Poggi was also into soil conservation. He was very knowledgeable and could tell you about the different soil types.
Mr. Poggi will be remembered as a strong willed individual, and was always giving and helping others. He was determined in everything that he did, and very wise, dispensing his wisdom to all who asked for it. His family nicknamed him the "Wise Ole Owl."
Mr. Poggi was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Harrington Moose Lodge #534, Holy Name Society, and the Harrington Senior Center.
He was preceded in death by his son, David A Poggi; brother, George Poggi; and sister, Louise Citroen.
