Gloria Alma Melvin

d. August 26, 2011

Gloria Alma (McNamire) Melvin
Felton, DE

Gloria went home to be with her Lord on Friday, August 26, 2011 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.  She was 83.

She was born in Pleasantville, NJ on Nov. 21, 1927 to the late Leslie and Edna (Williams) McNamire.  As a small child, she moved to Delaware and later graduated from Dover High School in 1945, where she played on the girls’ varsity basketball team.

Always the adventurous person, she married her husband, Joe on September 4, 1948 in a single engine airplane while flying over Harrington Airport.

Gloria worked in the office at Playtex for the first few years of her marriage, then devoted her time to working with her husband as they ran their dairy farm and raised their family.  She was a hard worker and was known for her cooking skills, always prepared for whomever happened to drop in at meal time.  She made the home a warm haven for everyone who passed through the door and always took time to listen.

Gloria was active in the Cedar Grove Wesleyan Church for as long as she was able.  She taught Sunday School for a number of years as well as working on various committees and served on the board.  She was always organizing dinners for various church functions and continued to contribute her wonderful dishes when she was no longer able to attend.  She loved her Lord and let everyone know by the life she lived.  She will be deeply missed by her church family.

Gloria was a devoted, loving wife and mother, who enjoyed spending time with and spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She will be missed so much by her family, neighbors, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Joseph B. Melvin, Sr. on August 7, 2011; brothers, John “Keith”, Dale, Leslie Jr., Brian, and Paul McNamire; sisters, Ione Biddle, Ruth Lynch, and Nellie Conley.

She is survived by her sons, J. Blaine Melvin Jr. and wife Evelyn of Little Hocking, Ohio, David L. Melvin of Harrington; daughter, Gail M. Melvin-Sides of Felton; grandchildren and spouses, Heather and Ed Vaccaro, Aaron and Heather Melvin, and Jesse Melvin; and great-grandchildren, Shelby, Anthony, Erin, and Alex.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 1, 2011, at 1 PM, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington.  Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 PM.  Interment will be at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Sandtown.
