GREENSBORO, Md. - Arthur Evans Pulleyn, Retired Lt. Colonel, USAF of Greensboro, Md., formerly of Magnolia passed away on Monday, Dec. 2, 2013 at his son Philip's home in Greensboro. He was 95.
Mr. Pulleyn was born in Leicester, N.Y., to the late Leon and Olive Pulleyn, and lived during the Great Depression. After high school graduation, and a year under his belt at Cornell University, he joined the Regular Army Air Corps, where he was stationed at Mitchell Field, N.Y. as a weather observer. After further training in weather service, he went on many missions, including flying in anti-submarine missions over North and Central Atlantic as one of the first air weather observers. He quickly rose to Second Lieutenant, than was stationed in Presque Isle Army Field in Maine as an Engineering and Survey Officer. He was then transferred to Newfoundland during WWII, where he did resupply and survey visits to the North Atlantic and Canada.
On a three day leave back to New York on April 7, 1942, he married Winifred Mary LaBar. He returned immediately to active duty and spent the next several years writing to his love back home. They lived in many locations as he was transferred to places such as Bermuda, Johnson Island, and Tripoli, Lybia. Eventually, he was stationed at Dover Air Force Base where he was the supervisor of the supply unit. He loaded many of the C141 transport planes and received accommodations for saving the military money in supplies and transportation costs. He retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1961, and continued to work on base as a civilian for an additional 14 years.
Mr. Pulleyn was preceded in death by a son, George C. Pulleyn.
He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Winifred Pulleyn of Greensboro, Md.; sons and daughter in law, Philip B. (Margaret) Pulleyn of Greensboro, Md., Donald A. Pulleyn of Smyrna; brothers and sister in law, Ronald (Dot) Pulleyn of Boulder City, Nev., David Pulleyn of Ithaca, N.Y.; grandchildren, Schuyler Pulleyn, Emily McMorris (husband, Nic), Todd Pulleyn.
Services will be 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6, 2013 at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington. Visitation will be 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013. Interment will be at Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.
