Allen S. Klapp, 90

Harrington – Allen S. Klapp, 90, of Harrington passed away peacefully August 8. 2015, surrounded by family at Thomas Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.

Mr. Klapp was born in Jarborsville, Md., the son of Betty and Charles Klapp. He served in the Marines from Dec 14, 1942 to July 26, 1945.  He was trained as a Machinist, Gunner and Radar Operator. He was a Machinist/ Gunner on a B-25, serving in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. His Military service took him across the Pacific flying 61 missions from Emirau Island.  Upon returning from the Military, he worked in Construction, for Bond Bread, Latex and finally joined the Pennsylvania Railroad June 26, 1946 – July 1, 1987; a total of 41 years.

He attended Calvary Wesleyan Church, was a member of the CKRT #7 Legion Post in Harrington, and Member of the PRR Veteran Employees’ Assoc and Lodge.  He has enjoyed the monthly breakfast gatherings with fellow PRR retirees.  He was a frequent visitor to the PRR Veteran Employees Lodge assisting wife Maxine managing the lodge for a week each summer and since her death, helping daughters Carol and Cheryl with managing duties.  During winter months, when the lodge was closed, he would make several trips from Harrington to Rehoboth to “check” on the Lodge and make sure everything was OK.

Mr. Klapp enjoyed life and took great pleasure in his grandchildren and great grandchildren up to
his final day.  He and his wife Maxine spent many summers in Pot Nets entertaining family and friends crabbing and fishing.  He and wife Maxine also enjoyed traveling across the US, visiting many places and finally a trip to Hawaii.  One of his extra past times was parking the NASCAR drivers in the infield of Dover Speedway before the use of motor homes.  He would tell stories of the drivers and their sponsors and in many cases receive mementos from the drivers for his service.  Until recently, he still helped family park cars on the east side of the track.  In the last few years, he and daughters Carol and Cheryl have visited many states out west including California, Arizona, Montana, Utah, South Dakota, and Wyoming.  Included in those trips were places like Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Mountain, Cody, Wyoming, Yellowstone Park, Jackson Hole, Salt Lake City, the great Salt Lake, Kennecott Copper Mine, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, Lake Havasu City, Southern California, Palm Springs, San Francisco, Yosemite, the Pawn Shop of the TV show “Pawn Stars “in downtown Las Vegas, Hoover Dam and Route 66 attractions.  Just recently, he and daughters Carol and Cheryl visited Panama and the Panama Canal, making a trip through the canal and back, and just a few months ago the trio traveled to Charlotte, N.C. and visited Dale Earnhardt’s Whiskey River Old Town.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Klapp was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Maxine, an infant son; Robert Allen, 4 brothers; Walter, Howard, Charles and Bruce; a sister, Evelyn Klapp, a step sister, Ellen-Bea Bloxom and a great grandson Jaeger W. Murray.

He is survived by a sister Lea Mathews of Pocomoke, Md., two daughters, Carol and husband Barry, Cheryl and husband Edward, 4 grandchildren, Renee McCracken, Lisa Murray, Tamara Welch Lloyd, Ryan Welch, 5 great grandchildren, Ashley Speicher, Tayg Murray, Tanner Murray, Sophie Lloyd and Wesley Lloyd.

A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, August 15, 2015, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE, at 12 PM. A visitation for family and friends will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Pennsylvania Railroad Veteran Employees’ Assoc., 1 Mews Rd., Milford, DE 19963.
