Otho "Dick" Lander, Sr. Obituary

Otho “Dick” Lander, Sr., of Harrington, passed away at home, on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at the age of 84.  He was the son of the late Fred and Anna Lander.

Mr. Lander, Sr. proudly served in the U.S. Navy.  He retired from Bayhealth Medical Center in 2000, after 18 years in the maintenance department.  He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrington.

Mr. Lander, Sr. was a sports enthusiast, who was inducted into the 2007 Delaware Softball Hall of Fame for coaching, playing, and managing softball teams. He had the world famous Schreppler Chriopractic/Dudley Sports teams which won league, regional, and national championships. In his younger days, he was a member of the Flying Dutchman baseball team which played from Maine to Florida.  Mr. Lander, Sr. coached many softball teams over his 42 years including middle school girls, women's leagues as well as men's leagues.

Mr. Lander, Sr. had a good life, when not busy with softball, he enjoyed playing horseshoes, loved Pittsburgh Steelers football, and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Lander, Sr. is preceded in death by sisters, Rita Lloyd, Audrey Fontello and Mary Lou Arrington.

Mr. Lander, Sr. is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Sylvia Lander; sons, Fred S. Lander, Billy Wayne Lander (Bertha), Otho “Dicky” Lander, Jr. (Diane); granddaughter Jennifer Davis (Kyle), great grandson Cole and sisters, Carole Anne Lander, and Jean Brown; and several nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate Mr. Lander, Sr’s life will be on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy, Harrington, at 12 Noon.  With internment following at Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.  A visitation for family and friends will be from 10 am – 12 pm, at the funeral home. Mr. Lander, Sr requested casual dress.
