Harvey "Bill" Maugel, Jr. Obituary

Harvey (Bill) W. Maugel, Jr. of Harrington, passed away at home on Friday, March 27, 2020 after a short bout with cancer.  He was the son of the late Harvey W. and Cecilia Maugel both of Philadelphia.

Bill was born in Philadelphia, PA and after graduating Dobbins Vocational Technical High School in Philly joined the US Air Force.  His career in the Air Force spanned 24 years with stints in both Korea and Vietnam.  He met his wife, Barbara, on one of his first overseas assignments in England and they married in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England.  Their first daughter, Sharonlee, was born a year later in England. On a later move to Dover AFB, Delaware their second daughter, Linda, was born.

His Air Force career took the family to 6 states in the USA and two overseas assignments – one to Germany and then back again to England.  For most of this career in the Air Force he worked in the Civil Engineering Squadron, but in Germany he was a courier.  Escorting top secret/classified documents to all other bases in Europe and on frequent trips back to Washington, DC.  After retiring honorably from the Air Force, Bill then worked at the Perdue Farms Chicken plant in Milford, DE and finally finished his career as a “fireman” in the Boiler Plant at Dover AFB.

Bill loved his hometown Phillies and never missed an Eagles game.  He was a proud Philadelphian when the Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2018.  His biggest hobbies were his HO and Fleischmann trains, reading Sherlock Holmes and watching Sherlock Holmes movies.  He loved traveling with his wife and visiting with family and was always there to help them out when needed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara, his daughter Sharonlee Isdell, his daughter Linda Monroe (Michael), his grandchildren, Crystal Rundle (James), Steven Bonovich (Jaime) and Hannah Monroe and his 5 great-grandkids, Erik Rundle, Nicholas Bonovich, Maddie Bonovich, Karen Bonovich and Emily Bonovich.

A private service will be held for the family at Thomas E. Melvin & Son Funeral Home, Inc. with burial at the Millsboro Veteran’s Cemetery on Monday, March 30, 2020.
