Cyril Hockensmith Obituary

Cyril Hockensmith, 91, of Harrington, passed away at Bayhealth Sussex Campus, on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.  He was the son of the late Cletius and Mary Hockensmith.

Mr. Hockensmith proudly served 20 years in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1971.  He served during the Korean War and in Vietnam. Mr. Hockensmith continued to serve his community until retiring from the Capitol Police Department with 22 years of service.  He was proud to be one of the oldest attending the police academy, outshining the younger members.

Mr. Hockensmith was a member of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Police, VFW, and NRA.  He was a faithful member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church.

Mr. Hockensmith kept his military discipline throughout his life, and was known as an easy going, caring man.  He was an avid Eagles and Phillies fan, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.  Mr. Hockensmith often thought of others over himself, stayed sharp in his mind, and never lost his sense of humor.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hockensmith is preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruthie Hockensmith; son, Joey Hockensmith; granddaughters, Amber, Megan, and Amanda Hockensmith; and 14 brothers and sisters.

Mr. Hockensmith is survived by his children, Randy Hockensmith (Dana), Kenneth Hockensmith (Sharon), Cindy Garrard (Don); sister, Anna Krichten; 9 grandchildren, Joey Hockensmith-Casson who he raised, LaDone “Buddy”, Bryan, Daniel, Todd, and Krissy; many adopted grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and extended family.
