Allen J. Long, Sr., 72, of Greenwood, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 17, 2026, surrounded by love. Born to the late William R. Long, Sr. and Alice E. Long, Allen lived a full, active life defined by hard work, laughter, and devotion to his family.
A proud and dedicated worker, Allen spent 32 years with Chrysler, eventually retiring as a shop steward. A true jack-of-all-trades, he lived by his favorite phrase: "I am not well educated, but I'm full of knowledge." Whether he was woodworking, building, or fixing houses, working on cars, or lending a hand to a neighbor or friend, Allen was always on the go. Known for his quick wit, sarcastic sense of humor, and outgoing nature, he was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back and keep you laughing in conversation for hours.
Nothing mattered more to Allen than his family and friends. He loved spending time outdoors—whether he was crabbing in North Carolina, fishing, going to the beach, or enjoying a fresh seafood meal. In his downtime, you could find him shooting pool, bowling, watching the horses race at the casino, or cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles. He was also a member of the Harrington Moose Lodge and the Smyrna American Legion.
Allen is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Long; his children, Heather Harris (Dashon), Allen Long Jr., Chelsea Long, and stepchildren, Renee Walters, and Stacy Hafer; nine grandchildren; his brother, William “Billy” Long, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Allen was preceded in death by his brothers, Byron Long, Guy Long, and Danny Long.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Thomas E. Melvin & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE. A visitation for family and friends will take place one hour prior, beginning at 12:00 PM.
