Larry Grinolds Obituary

Larry M. Grinolds, of Harrington, passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at the Delaware Veterans Home of Milford, he was 83.  Mr. Grinolds was born in North Dakota to the late, Earl and Alma Grinolds.

 

At the age of 16, Mr. Grinolds moved to Seattle, Washington, and at  the age of 18, he enlisted with the U.S. Air Force.  He did basic training in Texas, and was stationed at Dover Air Force Base in 1953, where he met his wife and married on April 20, 1956.  Upon his discharge in March of 1957, he went to work at Air Mode and Hayes as an A&E mechanic.  When the company lost their contract, he went to work for Lakeland Mobile Homes as a heater repairman for a few years, until he became employed at Stones Hotel where he worked for 2 years.  He then went back to Lakeland Mobile Home as a salesman, until they went out of business.  From that point, he worked full time in the maintenance department for the Sussex Technical High School retiring after 20 years of service, but remained there on a part time basis.

 

Mr. Grinolds enjoyed being outdoors, and enjoyed working in his garden, mowing his lawn and detailing cars. He loved Redskins football and NASCAR.  He loved to travel, and loved to visit his son Rickey and his family in Alabama.  Along with his wife by his side, he also loved to travel with friends like Dale and Jackie Sullivan and many others.  He will be remembered as a very quiet individual who loved his family very much, especially his wife and son.  He will be sadly missed. 

 

Mr. Grinolds was a member of the American Legion CKRT#7 of Harrington for over 50 years, a member of the Millsboro VFW, and a member of the Grace United Methodist Church of Georgetown. 

 

In addition to his parents, and a step-father, William Clarkson,  he was preceded in death by his son, whom he adored, Rickey Grinolds; brothers, Wayne, Rickey, and Dwight Grinolds. 

 

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Ellen Grinolds, sisters, LaDonna Moffett of Arizona, Judy Andrews of Washington State; 2 grandchildren, Joy Marie Price of Alabama, William Larry (Wife, Carmen) Grinolds of Florida; 11 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services will take place at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy, Harrington, on Thursday, May 24, at 11 AM, with a visitation Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 PM.  Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Delaware Veterans Home, 100 Delaware Veterans Blvd, Milford, DE 19963.
