William "Billy" Wothers Obituary

William Wothers, a devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather and hardworking man, passed away on February 23, 2024 at the age of 88 after a courageous battle with Dementia.  Born on May 18, 1935 in Greensboro, Maryland, he spent most of his life in Felton, Delaware.

He was a 1953 graduate of Greensboro High School.  Billy retired from Playtex Apparel, Inc. in 1997, after 38 years as a computer operator, but his passion was cultivating the earth.  His green thumb knew no boundaries.  He grew strawberries, pumpkins, mums and tended to his greenhouse where flower and vegetable plants were grown to stock his garden and his roadside stand.  He was known as the “Strawberry Man” or the “Mum Man”, depending on the season.  It was at the stand where he enjoyed talking with neighbors and friends.  Billy enjoyed spending time on the beach with family and close friends, as well as hosting gathering at his home by the backyard pool. Billy always looked forward to the monthly dinners and get togethers with his brothers, sister and their spouses-celebrating birthdays and anniversaries.  He also enjoyed traveling both at home and abroad.

Billy’s 65-year marriage to Jean was built on genuine love, unwavering commitment and shared dreams.

Above all, Billy cherished his family and his love for them knew no bounds.  He was a pillar of strength for a man of small stature, offering guidance, support and a great work ethic.

He was a humble man-never seeking the spotlight.  He was a member of Felton-Viola Methodist Church, Shawnee Dance Club and Delaware Farm Markets.  Although he didn’t join many organizations, he supported Jean, Karen, Randy and Weston in any of their community involvements.

His kindness touched the lives of everyone he met and his smile was infectious. He was a rare gem in this world, a real blessing, worked tirelessly and we are all the better for having known and loved him.

Billy was proceeded in death by his parents Annabelle and Floyd Wothers of Greensboro, MD.  He is survived by his loving wife, Jean, his daughter Karen Williams (Brett), son Randy (Jane), grandson Weston Williams, brothers, Donald Wothers (Betty), Ralph Wothers (Emily), Francis (Janet) and his sister, Janice Clere (Carl).   He is also survived by a bonus granddaughter Ella Murphy, and his French exchange student Sophie LeClerc and her family as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
