Jonathan "Jack" P. Longfellow

Jonathan P. "Jack" Longfellow, of Harrington, son of the late Paul and Elizabeth Longfellow, passed away on Monday, May 31, 2016. He was 78 years old.
Mr. Longfellow served in the Army Ready Reserves Tank Platoon for a period of six years beginning in 1956. After his time in the service, he became a truck driver, who enjoyed being on the road. He hauled produce from Florida to New York, hauled propane locally, and also hauled milk from local farms to Wawa in Pennsylvania. He was also the co-owner of Kountry Korner Groceries in Whiteleysburg, MD until it closed.
Mr. Longfellow was known as a jovial person with a big smile who enjoyed having a good time. He had no children of his own but loved the family he acquired. He was known as a tinkerer, and enjoyed garden tractor pulling contests with his great grandson. In his younger years, he drove a stock car and enjoyed racing. He was also an active member of the Harrington Moose Lodge #534.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Gladys Longfellow, and his brother, Marion Longfellow.
He is survived by his stepdaughter, Brenda Beene; stepson, Chuck (Suzanne) Hurd; granddaughter, Missy Hardy; grandsons, Chris Hurd and Brian (Deb) Hurd; great grandchildren, Dustin Hardy, Rylee Hurd, and Brayden Hurd; sister, Becky Dunn; sister in law, Bertha Mae Longfellow; two nieces and nephews; his companion, Ann Porter and his dog Bo.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 7 , 2016 at the Melvin Funeral Home 15522 S. DuPont Hwy. Harrington DE from 6PM-7PM, with a Memorial Service following at 7PM.
